Weekly Update 3/11

Dear Members and Friends of JASH,

This week, we remember the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake that devastated the Tohoku region. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake erupted on March 11, 2011 at 2:46pm JST (March 10 at 7:46pm HST) and was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan. The earthquake triggered numerous subsequent disasters, from the massive tsunami to nuclear accidents. In the past ten years, the region has persevered through the physical and emotional scars left by the tragedy. Thanks to their own tremendous efforts and the assistance of numerous volunteers, Tohoku has been rebuilding with renewed strength.

Yesterday, we shared photos and captions curated by longtime JASH member and Tohoku volunteer Raymond Tabata for JASH’s memorial presentation (click here to view). Today, we share the talk-story webinar he did with us last year. In this program, Mr. Tabata presents a selection of his photographs taken during his volunteer trips and provides further commentary on his experiences in the Tohoku communities following the disaster.

To see more of Mr. Tabata's photos, check out his interview with Hawaii News Now's Jim Mendoza and JASH President Reyna Kaneko by clicking here.
