Did you know that the Cherry Blossom Festival started in 1958 and is one of the longest, continually running ethnic festivals in the State of Hawaii?
JASH is excited to welcome the 68th Cherry Blossom Festival Court to share their stories of the Cherry Blossom Festival Queen Contestant experience, reflect on leadership for Japanese-American women, and share their hopes for the future and life after the Cherry Blossom Festival. Since its founding, the Cherry Blossom Festival serves the Japanese community in Hawaii by perpetuating Japanese culture and enriching the lives of young women of Japanese ancestry. Through the queen contestant experience, these women are given opportunities to connect with their heritage, improve their poise and public speaking, and develop a myriad of leadership skills through various classes.

Join Dr. Tezuka, associate curator for Hawai‘i Triennial 2022, in conversation with Katherine Don, executive director of Hawai‘i Contemporary. A noted specialist of post-war Asian art, Dr. Tezuka will discuss her transnational approach to curating, drawing examples from her rich and diverse curatorial practice as both an independent and institutional curator, working across foundations and museums.

Crafting the Perfect Sake in Kanagawa

In Kanagawa Prefecture, sake brewers take advantage of their bountiful natural surroundings, like the pristine waters that originate on nearby Mount Tanazawa. Izumibashi Sake Brewery, located in Kanagawa, is one of the few breweries in Japan that grows, harvests, and mills its own rice for sake production, assuring the utmost quality and control from start to finish. In this program, sake expert John Gauntner illuminates the unique nature of Kanagawa sake, and Izumibashi President Yuichi Hashiba gives a behind-the-scenes look at the brewery facility through an exclusive virtual tour. The program will conclude with a virtual sake and food pairing.
