This week, we bring you an exciting announcement regarding our upcoming Annual Friendship Golf Classic!
First is the launch of our Golf Classic’s Golf Ball Drop fundraiser on November 2, 2020. This event will be great fun for everyone (not just golfers!), and you do not need to be registered for the Friendship Golf Classic to participate and win.
With the help of Mauna Loa Helicopter, we’ll be dropping 1,000 golf balls from the sky over a target hole. The five balls that enter or are closest to the hole will win prizes! Proceeds from this fun event will go directly to JASH so that we can continue bringing you educational, cultural, and business-minded programs.

The Japan-America Society of Hawaii is excited to co-sponsor the following webinar with JASH corporate member, the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Under the constantly evolving COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining economic ties between Japan and Hawaii is an unprecedented challenge. What are the prospects of economic exchange between the two regions? What new initiatives are in place to foster the bonds? Join us for a panel discussion on pragmatic ways to enhance the Japan-Hawaii relationship. We will have brief presentations by the three speakers, Takaho Iwasaki, Sumner La Croix, and Yasuo Tanabe, followed by discussion and a Q&A session. Virtual Program Situating Gender and Law in Japanese Legal Education: Preliminary exploration and comments Wednesday, October 14, 2020 12:00pm-1:30pm HST Free
Abstract: If the status of women in Japanese law and women in Japan more generally is to be meaningfully considered, circumstances demand qualitative and quantitative attention to inequities in the human institutions from which law derives. Unfortunately, this subject has received a relative lack of attention in our scholarship. Accordingly, this paper looks at the comparative history and status quo of women in legal education. We in the U.S. made great strides regarding inclusiveness of women and gender and law studies beginning from the 1970s, accelerating these into the 1980s. Though there is still much to be done better here too, it seems fair to say that we moved ahead of Japan where positive changes didn't gain much traction until the 1990s and there has been not enough at that even to the present day. I will explore how and ultimately, why, the two paths diverged so distinctly. I will posit, with humble recognition for the vital agency of women and feminist allies, that well-functioning programs for personnel, pedagogy, community, and scholarship by and for women in legal education can make things better for "women in the law” and "women and the law”, and further foster a less patriarchal society generally.
Mark Levin is a Professor of Law at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

As part of the U.S. - Japan Council's "Regional Women in Leadership" series, the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center is partnering with the USJC on a two-part panel titled “The Fearless, The Fabulous, & The Feminine.” Both organizations, fulfilling their purpose to educate and strengthen US - Japan relations, will discuss the topic of “Womenomics” which intends to strengthen female representation and entrepreneurship.

The Consulate-General of Japan in Honolulu is pleased to announce the upcoming virtual Informational Sessions for the 2021 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program recruitment. The sessions, via Zoom, will be held on the following the dates and times:
