Dear Members and Friends of JASH,
This week, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii celebrated our 44th birthday.
On September 28, 1976, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii held its inaugural meeting at the Ilikai Hotel. The meeting was attended by about 200 people, including Hawaii Governor George R. Ariyoshi and Japanese Consul General Masao Tsukamoto. The officers elected that night were Frank E. Midkiff, president; former US Ambassador to Japan John M. Allison, vice president; Masaji Marumoto, vice president; Ralph Honda, secretary; and Sydney Kosasa, treasurer.

The United Japanese Society of Hawaii brings their annual Tsukimi no Kai (Full Moon Viewing) on YouTube. This culturally enriching event under the full moon will be their first virtual celebration and they hope you will join them. This year’s festivities feature a variety of entertainment, including a special Tamaguchi offering and blessing; haiku lesson; koto performance; doyo “children’s songs” performance; and dancing!

A Night of Japanese Traditional Music with Master Kouzan Oyama of Shishido

The Japan Society of Boston and the Japan Society of Northern California are proud to jointly present a musical night to remember with Kouzan Oyama (小山貢山). Master Kouzan is a Tsugaru-Jamisen (a type of shamisen, or three-stringed Japanese guitar) player, master teacher, and two-time winner of the Tsugaru-Jamisen World Championships. He is now a celebrated teacher in Shinjuku as well as New York.
In this fascinating workshop, Master Kouzan will showcase the allure of traditional Japanese music by demonstrating the Tsugaru-Jamisen, the koto (Japanese horizontal harp) and Okinawa sanshin (three-stringed Japanese banjo). Learn about the differences between traditional Japanese instruments (wagakki) and Western instruments and enjoy a performance of Japanese wagakki online!

Love sushi and looking to enjoy more fresh, delicious vegetables? At this virtual workshop, Yuki Gomi, author of Sushi at Home, introduces sushi-making techniques using flavorful, seasonal veggies. All participants will receive a recipe and suggested shopping list and may follow along during the workshop or simply observe. Participants will learn how to make their own vegan sushi creations, including: cucumber & umeboshi hoso-maki; avocado & carrot with black sesame seed; inside-out California roll; and roasted red pepper temari sushi.

Growing up in the poverty of the plantation camps of Kauai, Spark Matsunaga was a warrior, a member of the 100th Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team; a poet, establishing the position of Poet Laureate of the U.S.; and a politician, serving in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate. He created the U.S. Peace Institute and spearheaded the Redress Bill for Japanese Americans incarcerated during WWII, through the U.S. Senate. Having tasted the bitterness of war, this man of compassion always strove to find sweet and everlasting peace.

2021 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program Informational Sessions
The Consulate-General of Japan in Honolulu is pleased to announce the upcoming virtual Informational Sessions for the 2021 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program recruitment. The sessions, via Zoom, will be held on the following the dates and times:
The sessions will only be open to those who pre-register. To register, please submit RSVP to: jethi@hl.mofa.go.jp and provide your first and last name, university (if student), email address and which session you would like to attend.
The Consulate will be accepting registrations until 4:00pm one day prior to each info session.
