Weekly Update 1/28 - New Year's Reception 2021

Dear Members and Friends of JASH,

Thank you to everyone who attended last night’s New Year’s Reception! We hope you feel rejuvenated from the uplifting messages from Governor and Mrs. Ige, Mayor Blangiardi, and Consul General Aoki. Attendees also enjoyed fantastic performances from Dragon Beat and Madoka no Kai, and our annual JASH kagamiwari ceremony and sake lesson from sake sommelier Keith Nakaganeku of The Cherry Co., Ltd. We especially enjoyed the interactive networking and interview parts of last night’s program, as it was great to catch up with all of our JASH members and friends.

If you missed watching our New Year’s Reception live, you may watch (and rewatch!) the program on our JASH YouTube Channel by clicking here.

February 2021 Ehime Maru Memorial Ceremony Cancelled Due to COVID-19

Photo of the memorial from the 2020 ceremony

Tuesday, February 9, 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the sinking of the Japanese Uwajima Fisheries High School training ship Ehime Maru which occurred in an accident with the USS Greeneville submarine that claimed the lives of nine Japanese crewmembers, including four high school students. This year’s Ehime Maru Memorial Ceremony at the Ehime Maru Memorial in Kakaako Waterfront Park has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings. Instead, a private wreath laying ceremony will be conducted by the Ehime Maru Memorial Association staff, which will be filmed and shared with the bereaved families, Ehime Prefecture and Uwajima City officials, Uwajima Fisheries High School as well as our local volunteer groups. We ask that the public please refrain from visiting the memorial site to comply with the City & County of Honolulu’s Emergency Order regarding gatherings.
