JASH Weekly Update: Happy May!

Dear Members and Friends of JASH, There are many reasons to celebrate this first week of May. As we near the end of Golden Week, our first major celebration is for Children's Day (Kodomo no Hi or Tango no Sekku) today, Thursday, May 5. With decorations of decorative armor and helmets (yoroi kabuto), carp pennants (koinobori), and irises (ayame), we pray for the health and happiness of our children. Last year, Mrs. Takako Aoki shared a Children's Day essay she wrote for our weekly Update. Click below to read her beautiful peace, "Kazekaoru."

This week is also Teacher Appreciation Week! Here at JASH, we are so thankful for all of the educators who volunteer their time and expertise with us in our educational programs such as Japan Day, Japan Wizards Competition, and Japan-In-A-Suitcase. From school teachers to extracurricular leaders, we truly appreciate the love, support, and hard work you all dedicate to raising our keiki. Otsukaresama desu!

Next up, on Sunday, May 8, we celebrate Mother's Day. Mahalo nui loa to all of the mothers, grandmas, aunties, and all women who have shared with us their unconditional love and support. Happy Mother's Day!

Finally, the month of May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America's history and are instrumental in its future success.
