JASH Weekly Update: Good Luck To Our Japan Wizards Finalists!
Dear Members & Friends of JASH,
Join us in wishing GOOD LUCK to all of our FINALIST high school teams competing who will go head-to-head over Zoom this weekend for the chance to win educational trips to Japan! Through the JASH Japan Wizards Competition (JWC), 24 teams of three from 15 public and private schools on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii have spent months studying Japanese culture, language, history, economy, pop culture, and MORE. After last weekend's Preliminary Round, 12 of these hardworking teams qualified to represent their schools in Saturday's Final Round. The JASH Japan Wizards Competition challenges Hawaii high school students at various levels of Japanese study to continue learning about Japan outside of their classrooms. By including a wide variety of topics, the JWC encourages holistic knowledge of Japan, supplementing the subjects learned at school. Upcoming Programs
SAVE THE DATE for our annual Japan Currents program, this year titled Japan Currents: Political and Economic Challenges in the U.S.-Japan Relationship on Wednesday, March 16, 2022. This will be a HYBRID program, with the in-person component starting at noon (HST) and the virtual livestream beginning at 1:00PM (HST). More information is coming soon. Mahalo to the Embassy of Japan and the National Association of Japan-America Societies for sponsoring this event.
NOW ACCEPTING JUNIOR AMBASSADOR APPLICATIONS for the 34th Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC), which this year will be a hybrid cultural exchange program with in-person workshops, local field trips and virtual exchange meetings from April through August 2022 for students in Hawaii born between August 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011 (10-11 years old). The application and information about the 34th Annual APCC program can be found online at http://jashawaii.org/apcc. The application must be received by JASH no later than Friday, March 25, 2022. Applications may be mailed or submitted online at the link above.
In a competitive selection process, JASH will select four students (two boys and two girls) as Junior Ambassadors (JAs). The JAs will join over 200 students from over 50 different countries and regions throughout Asia and the Pacific in a virtual global exchange hosted by the APCC head office in Fukuoka, Japan in late summer. In preparation for the virtual exchange, JAs will attend bi-monthly JASH workshops where they will engage with Asian-Pacific cultures through local field trips for hands-on experiences with Japanese culture; cross-cultural research reports; leadership development and team-building activities; and a three-day trip to the 'Akahiao Nature Institute in Kona on Hawaii Island to learn about our place in the Pacific and our role as global citizens.
The APCC’s vision is to deepen appreciation for the cultures of other nations and regions with the aims of promoting mutual understanding and friendship, nurturing international awareness in young people, and working toward world peace and co-existence. Our JASH hybrid program curriculum builds valuable life skills, including cross-cultural understanding, multilingual communication, leadership, and teamwork, fostering our JAs as the next generation of Nichibei (Japan-America) Leaders.

JASH is proud to return as a community partner for the Hawai‘i Triennial 2022 (HT22), an annual art event organized by Hawai‘i Contemporary. HT22 will be framed around the fluid concept of Pacific Century - E Ho‘omau no Moananuiākea, interweaving themes of history, place, and identity within the context of Hawaiʻi’s unique location at the confluence of Asia-Pacific and Oceania. Curated in collaboration with Dr. Miwako Tezuka, HT22 invites a number of Japanese and Nikkei artists from around the world, including Ai Iwane, ‘Elepaio Press (Richard Hamasaki and Mark Hamasaki), Masanori Handa, Mika Tajima, Yuree Kensaku, and many other incredible creators.

Ina Goodwin Tateuchi and her late husband, Atsuhiko Tateuchi, both came from hard-working families and were taught to appreciate and respect education. They wish to provide $5000 scholarships for students who are residents of the Pacific Rim states (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington) who demonstrate hard work, dedication and sincerity. Students must have financial need and be of Japanese or other Asian ancestry, including multi-ethnic Asians. These scholarships will be renewable for up to four years.
