Dear Members and Friends of JASH, This Saturday, we take a moment of silence in memory of the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Our hearts are with those who lost family, friends, and loved ones during this tragedy. For further reading, we recommend visiting the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s 20th anniversary tribute. Virtual Visitor Industry Charity Walk August 30 - September 12, 2021 The Visitor Industry Charity Walk (VICW) is an important fundraising event that supports our educational programs like our Japan Wizards Competition (JWC) and the Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC). Join the U.S.-Japan Council Oregon Region and Shokookai of Portland for a most unique story of the Japanese American experience during WWII. Ed Kawasaki is an American citizen who was visiting his grandfather in Hiroshima when WWII started. He was an eyewitness to the atomic bomb and will speak on how he survived the tragedy. Ed’s story will touch on Japanese life as seen through the eyes of an American during the WWII era including the steps taken by the local governing organizations to cope with being at war. Delicate and delicious, tofu is a versatile food enjoyed in many Japanese dishes, from silky, chilled hiyayakko to deep-fried agedashidofu. At this online workshop, learn how to make fresh, authentic tofu at home with London-based chef and culinary educator Akemi Yokoyama. In the spirit of sustainability embodied by the Japanese concept of mottainai, participants will also use the tofu by-product to make tasty okara mochi. Tune in to watch live from the Awa Jurobe Yashiki Puppet Theater and Museum in the Tokushima Prefecture–home of more traditional puppet troupes and theaters than anywhere else in Japan! The program features speaker Martin Holman, a literary translator, professor, puppeteer, and puppet theater director, and will include an introduction to the history of the traditional Japanese puppet theater, as well as a close up look at the construction and manipulation techniques of the puppets and the wide variety of puppets used.
