JASH Weekly Update 8/19: Great Upcoming Community Programs
Dear Members and Friends of JASH, This week, we have a number of awesome upcoming programs to share with you from other Japan-related organizations. From a book talk by author Jodie Ching (Chiemi Souen) to upcoming Japanese college fairs by License Academy, there’s sure to be something for everyone in your ʻohana! Don’t forget to JOIN TEAM JASH in this year’s virtual Visitor Industry Charity Walk, where the funds raised support our educational programs like our Japan Wizards Competition (JWC) and Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC). Support JASH in the Virtual Visitor Industry Charity Walk
August 30 – September 12, 2021
For 2021, the Visitor Industry Charity Walk (VICW) is going virtual! This charity walk is an important fundraising event that supports our educational programs like our Japan Wizards Competition (JWC) and the Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC). The funds raised through this walk support JASH and other non-profit organizations throughout Oahu. Support JASH students and our programs by joining our JASH walking team! From August 30 to September 12, walkers will use a mobile application to track steps and connect with Team JASH. To join, click here and select “Pledge To This Team” to register as a walker. Registration (which counts as a donation!) is $50 for adults and $25 for children under 18. Walkers will receive an email with information on how to set up the step-tracking app upon registration. Want to donate to JASH instead? Help us maximize our charity walk turnout by making your tax-deductible contribution via the VICW. Donating is through the same page as signing up to walk; click here and select “Pledge To This Team” to make a donation towards JASH. ANYONE can participate in the Charity Walk! Invite your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, clients, schools, clubs, etc. and safely track your steps from August 30 to September 12.
Nominations for UJSH Nenchosha Ian Engei Taikai Honorees
Keiro no Hi (“Respect for the Aged Day”) is a National Holiday in Japan, held in September of each year. The United Japanese Society of Hawaii (UJSH) values the sacrifices and contributions made by seniors and will honor members of Hawaii Nikkei organizations, like the Japan-America Society of Hawaii, who are attaining 80 years of age in 2021 with a special birth year celebration.
This year, to celebrate the UJSH’s 47th Annual Nenchosha Ian Engei Taikai (Senior Citizens’ Festival), UJSH will recognize each honoree with a lunch and a special gift. A luncheon is scheduled for Saturday, September 25, 2021 at the Hawaii Okinawa Center at 10 a.m. Should safety concerns arise and they are unable to have an in-person banquet, a virtual online program will be planned with a bento lunch pick-up. Please note that due to space limitations, UJSH will be selecting the honorees from the overall pool of applicants, so application does not guarantee selection. An Afternoon with the Author: Jodie Chiemi Ching Sat., Aug. 21 1:30pm (HST) Zoom
During “An Afternoon with the Author,” Chiemi Souen [Jodie Chiemi Ching] will discuss her new illustrated historical fiction children’s book, “IKIGAI.” This book was written by an Okinawan for Okinawan children, an unrepresented voice in American literature. However, this story does not just teach about Okinawan culture. It asks a universal question that all humans can relate to: “What is my life’s purpose, and how do I find it.”

Call for Contestants for the 70th Cherry Blossom Festival

The 70th Cherry Blossom Festival is currently accepting applications for Queen Contestants! The deadline to apply is August 23, 2021. The Cherry Blossom Festival is open to young women of Japanese ancestry between the ages of 19-28. This unique experience includes a variety of cultural classes, personal and professional development training and community service opportunities.
