Virtual Panel Discussion From the Traditional to the Modern: A Conversation about Japanese Music Inspired by the Films of J-FEST Wed., May 19 5-6pm (HST)


JASH is proud to be a Festival Partner for the Hawaii International Film Festival’s 2021 J-FEST showcase from May 13-23, sponsored by First Insurance Company of Hawaii. As part of the movie-watching festivities, we’ve teamed up to present a special virtual panel discussion building on themes touched on HIFF films ITO and JAZZ KISSA BASIE. On May 19 at 5pm (HST), join musicians Darin Miyashiro, Chris Molina, Anju Madoka, and William Watson as they discuss the preservation of traditional Japanese instrumental music and music culture, and the modern evolution/adaptation of Japanese instrumental music both in Japan and around the world. NVMC’s “An Afternoon with the Author” invites published fiction and non-fiction writers from around Hawaii and the mainland into our homes. By means of ZOOM, the Center will host a different author each month to talk about their work, the story behind the story, and their personal journey on the way to having their work published. Concerned about Hawaii’s future, Governor Ariyoshi has spent the greater part of the last 20 years writing his newest book “Hawaii’s Future”. The book is a guide and message to today’s young leaders. Virtual 2021 Spring College Fair

May 19-June 2 (English) June 3-June 17 (Japanese) 3-5pm (HST)


Many Japanese universities welcome all students who are currently studying outside of Japan. They offer incentives such as entrance exams taken outside of Japan, English-only enrollment, scholarships, Fall Entrance, exchange programs with top universities in the world, and transferring systems from colleges. Each participating university has a designated program for international students and will be providing the latest information. English presentations will run from May 19 to June 2; Japanese presentations will be from June 3 to June 17. For details and to register, click here.
