JASH Weekly Update 4/22: “Facing the Mountain” by Daniel James Brown

We love collaborating with other Japan-America programs! Coming up on Tuesday, May 11 at 2:00pm (HST), JASH is proud to be a community co-sponsor for Densho’s official virtual book launch ofFacing the Mountain. Written by Daniel James Brown, NY Times best-selling author of The Boys in the Boat, this new book takes place in the backdrop of the WWII incarceration of Japanese Americans and details the exploits and heroism of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an all-Japanese American segregated unit. The virtual event will feature a conversation between Brown and Densho Executive Director Tom Ikeda, who has conducted oral histories with many of the men highlighted in the book.
There is no cost to attend the virtual book launch, but pre-registration is required.
Facing the Mountain is a chronicle of wartime America and the battlefields of Europe. Based on extensive interviews with the families of the protagonists as well as deep archival research, Daniel James Brown captures the kaleidoscopic journey of four Japanese American families and their sons. While some fought on battlefields as members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, others fought to defend the constitutional rights of a community. Regardless of where their battles played out, these individuals were exemplifying American patriotism under extreme duress by striving, resisting, standing on principle, and enduring.

Densho, an organization that has been preserving Japanese American history for the past 25 years, has worked closely with Daniel James Brown from the outset to ensure that the story is accurate and truly reflects the Japanese American WWII experience.
Densho Executive Director Tom Ikeda, who conducted the oral histories with many of the men highlighted in the book, writes in the foreword: “Facing the Mountain comes to us during a time of deep unrest, a time when our empathy for others is so needed to guide the choices we will make. This book will open hearts.”
