JASH Weekly Update 11/4: Upcoming Events in November
Dear Members and Friends of JASH, We have a number of great events planned for this November! TONIGHT, we begin our Taste of JASH: Nomu Edition series! The first of these virtual pau hanas will feature Kо̄ Hana Distillers this evening, Thursday, November 4 at 5:30PM (HST).
Farm-to-Bottle Kо̄ Hana Hawaiian Agricole Rum is handcrafted from heirloom Hawaiian sugarcane (kо̄) brought to the islands by the early Polynesian voyagers. Their popular tasting tours are offered daily in both English and Japanese. Click here for their website. Two weeks after our Kо̄ Hana pau hana, we welcome Ken Hirata, founder and owner of Hawaiian Shochu Company in Haleiwa for the next installment in our Taste of JASH: Nomu Edition series. We have information on how you can pre-order his small-batch shochu for JASH pick-up coming soon, but for now we encourage you to save your spot for this virtual pau hana on Thursday, November 18 at 5:30PM (HST).
Hawaiian Shochu Company Founder and Owner Ken Hirata and his wife Yumiko produce small-batch Honkaku Shochu in Haleʻiwa using locally-sourced sweet potatoes (imo) through traditional, old-style techniques. Click here for their website. Finally, join us for our second workshop with the ʻAkahiao Nature Institute’s (ANI), Edible World: Nature that Nurtures Us on Saturday, November 13 at 10AM (HST). Everyone is welcome! Part II of the Edible World Series will focus on how nature nurtures our well-being mentally, physically, and spiritually. Come along as the team from ANI guide you through one of Huʻehuʻeʻs most prominent features, ʻAkahipuʻu. The puʻu serves as an outdoor classroom for the groups we host and many free form discussions have taken place in this space, as being in nature is mentally uplifting and has many health benefits. Then, we will tap into lāʻau lapaʻau or medicinal herbs and plants that the garden provides, followed by a hands-on lei workshop that feeds and nourishes the soul.

Our Silent Auction is one of our biggest annual fundraisers and is part of our annual Bridge Awards Event. Proceeds from the auction go directly to JASH so that we may continue to produce programming for our community. Join the Matsunaga Institute for Peace on Veterans Day as Director G.K. Hunter discusses his latest documentary "Sakura & Pearls: Healing from World War 2" that is a cutting edge PBS documentary about a special meeting between the Japanese Survivors of the Atomic Bomb and the US Survivors of Pearl Harbor. This remarkable and intense exchange between former enemies is sparking dialogue about how we can resolve conflict without repeating the painful experiences of our ancestors. Also joining will be Professor Brien Hallett, a Veteran Marine in Vietnam and Director of the Matsunaga Institute for Peace. Professor Hallett teaches about what Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and others did and thought has been central to a deep understanding of war, peace, and the ethics that govern both. PRE-EVENT: Japanese Film Festival Online 2022 Online: Nov. 15-21
Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began, people around the world have been facing tremendous uncertainty, loneliness, and grief. As a response to this, last year the Japanese Film Festival (JFF) launched an online film festival in hopes that Japanese films would be able to provide some positivity and light into viewer’s lives, even if only a little.
