JASH Update: Happy Hinamatsuri!
Dear Members & Friends of JASH,
March 3 is Hinamatsuri, also known as Girls' Day or Momo-no-Sekku (Peach Festival). On this day, we wish for the good health and happiness of girls. We also celebrate Hinamatsuri here in Hawaii, with many Nikkei families displaying their hina dolls and enjoying cutely decorated mochi and other snacks. In lieu of our annual JASH Tomodachi Hinamatsuri celebration, this year we've asked our Tomodachi members to share their Girls' Day memories and festive recipes. Hinamatsuri Recipes

Barazushi
Barazushi is a dish for celebrations, including Hinamatsuri! A kind of 'scattered' sushi, this dish is colorful and festive. Mixing in in-season vegetables makes this dish feel like spring. Click for recipe.
Hishi Mochi
Hishi mochi is often displayed with the hinakazari dolls. Its diamond shape and colors of red, white, and green are said to represent fertility and health. Click for recipe.
Chi Chi Dango
Chi Chi Dango is a sweet, soft, and chewy mochi available from mochiya year-round in Hawaii. Although the traditional Girls' Day colors are red (pink), white, and green, you can make these mochi colorful and fun when you make them at home! Click for recipe.

JASH's annual Japan Currents program will be a hybrid in-person and online event on Wednesday, March 16, 2022. For those joining us for our in-person luncheon at the Cupola Gallery at Stage Restaurant in Honolulu, you must RSVP by Tuesday, March 8. Our program on "Political and Economic Challenges in the U.S.-Japan Relationship" features two experts in U.S.-Japan affairs. We are honored to welcome Dr. Joshua Walker, President and CEO of Japan Society, and Dr. Mieko Nakabayashi, Professor at Waseda University and External/Independent Director of TOPPAN INC. This program will be moderated by Ms. Barbara Tanabe, founder of Hoʻakea Communications, LLC and JASH Board Director. Mahalo to the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. and the National Association of Japan-America Societies for sponsoring this event.
NOW ACCEPTING JUNIOR AMBASSADOR APPLICATIONS for the 34th Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC), which this year will be a hybrid cultural exchange program with in-person workshops, local field trips and virtual exchange meetings from April through August 2022 for students in Hawaii born between August 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011 (10-11 years old). The application and information about the 34th Annual APCC program can be found online at http://jashawaii.org/apcc. The application must be received by JASH no later than Friday, March 25, 2022. Applications may be mailed or submitted online at the link above. In a competitive selection process, JASH will select four students (two boys and two girls) as Junior Ambassadors (JAs). The JAs will join over 200 students from over 50 different countries and regions throughout Asia and the Pacific in a virtual global exchange hosted by the APCC head office in Fukuoka, Japan in late summer. In preparation for the virtual exchange, JAs will attend bi-monthly JASH workshops where they will engage with Asian-Pacific cultures through local field trips for hands-on experiences with Japanese culture; cross-cultural research reports; leadership development and team-building activities; and a three-day trip to the 'Akahiao Nature Institute in Kona on Hawaii Island to learn about our place in the Pacific and our role as global citizens. The APCC’s vision is to deepen appreciation for the cultures of other nations and regions with the aims of promoting mutual understanding and friendship, nurturing international awareness in young people, and working toward world peace and co-existence. Our JASH hybrid program curriculum builds valuable life skills, including cross-cultural understanding, multilingual communication, leadership, and teamwork, fostering our JAs as the next generation of Nichibei (Japan-America) Leaders. Hawai‘i Triennial 2022
Now - May 8 Citywide Exhibition
JASH is proud to return as a community partner for the Hawai‘i Triennial 2022 (HT22), an annual art event organized by Hawai‘i Contemporary. HT22 will be framed around the fluid concept of Pacific Century - E Ho‘omau no Moananuiākea, interweaving themes of history, place, and identity within the context of Hawaiʻi’s unique location at the confluence of Asia-Pacific and Oceania. Curated in collaboration with Dr. Miwako Tezuka, HT22 invites a number of Japanese and Nikkei artists from around the world, including Ai Iwane, ‘Elepaio Press (Richard Hamasaki and Mark Hamasaki), Masanori Handa, Mika Tajima, Yuree Kensaku, and many other incredible creators.
